From Blues to Breakthroughs:
Revitalizing 1-2-1s with ChatGPT-generated Activities

Bio: Based in Bologna, Italy, Olga is a seasoned in-company English teacher with a mission to empower professionals to communicate more effectively in today’s global workplace. With a career spanning since 2014, Olga specializes in Business English and ESP , tailoring language instruction to meet the unique needs of diverse industries and roles. Backed up by extensive CPDs in Business English, ESP, and cross-cultural communication, Olga provides a well-rounded approach to build confidence and intercultural competence for real-world professional success.

Many adult English learners struggle with a persistent sense of stagnation, especially in their productive skills like speaking. Feelings of slow progress, frustration, and even failure can overshadow their journey, creating a cycle of negative emotions that ultimately hinders language acquisition. Teachers, as well as students themselves, happen to overlook these emotional barriers, yet they play an essential role in learning success.

This session explores ChatGPT-generated activities designed to alleviate speaking anxiety and promote a sense of accomplishment in one-on-one online lessons.

By addressing these common but underappreciated challenges, we’ll equip teachers with tools to transform learner setbacks into confidence-building breakthroughs, accelerating both progress and motivation.

Unleashing creativity in ELT: empowering (both) teachers and learners to innovate

Bio: Giorgia de Musso is a passionate, DipTESOL qualified student and teacher and CELTA trainer based in Turin, Italy, where she coordinates a private language centre.

She has worked as an English teacher with young learners and teenagers in Poland, Scotland and Italy. She’s particularly interested in promoting inclusivity and modelling democracy in education, reflective practice and…whatever concerns astronomy.

As teachers, we often grapple with the challenge of engaging our students deeply and encouraging them to use language in meaningful, productive ways. A common pitfall is dedicating excessive time to sourcing materials, only to end up feeling overwhelmed and resorting to last-minute lesson planning. Instead, the key lies in creatively reimagining and adapting the resources already at our disposal. Creativity is a ready-to-use and everlasting resource that can transform our teaching. By granting students the space and freedom to break away from rigid patterns and conventional language use—and by modeling this ourselves as teachers—we can unlock remarkable levels of linguistic and creative expression.

Some Ideas to Foster Young Learners’ Critical Thinking

Bio: Victor Carreão has worked in ELT in Brazil in varied educational contexts. He is currently an English Language Arts teacher in a bilingual school, bringing literature and language together in the classroom.

He holds a PhD in Linguistics, focusing on sociolinguistic research, and has also worked as a speaking examiner for international exams.

In this session, we shall look into some writing ideas and how they may help bringing social justice discussions to the English language classes.

Paulo Freire has once said that “reading the world always precedes reading the word”. Different realities can be portrayed by literature, which also provides context for grammar and vocabulary teaching. By reading such texts, students can relate them to their lives. By seeing their realities on print, they can exercise a more active skill: writing. They can show their stories to the world in writing contests and, with that, realize that their place abroad may also be in an assembly delivering a speech that calls out for action and responsibility on some of the hardest questions that have haunted humanity.

We will share two projects undertaken with young learners to illustrate how literature and writing can motivate students and raise awareness about identity. The second will portray how images and short descriptions may be used to teach sentence structure and allow students to talk about subjects that matter to them.

Teaching English, Breaking Barriers: Gender Equity in the English Classroom

Bio: Estefanía Ferrero is a high-school and university teacher, has a degree in English Conference Interpreting (Universidad del Salvador) and is studying English Language Teaching (Universidad del Salvador).

She holds a diploma in Comprehensive Sexuality Education and a specialization in Child Molestation, Grooming, Sexuality in digital environments, Disability, Masculinities and Trans Youth (Universidad Nacional de San Martín). She is currently completing a postgraduate degree in Genders, Feminisms and Human Rights (Universidad Nacional de Quilmes). She is a researcher for USAL-CONICET, and is currently working on the research “Ornamental” English: a possible form of social exclusion.

Although the role of education is undeniable in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 5: Gender equality, many teachers struggle to find the strategies to address gender equity in the English class.
My presentation will explain how gender equity can be addressed together with the teaching of English Language contents and skills.
The main objective will be to discuss strategies to teach our curricular contents and while doing so, raising awareness of gender bias, visibilising inequalities, including realities that have been historically and systematically excluded from both society and the curriculum, and fostering the rejection of discrimination.

The talk will consist of an outline of practical proposals which will help teachers approach their classrooms through the lens of gender equity. These proposals include: integrating our ELT contents with gender equity, approaching emerging situations as teaching opportunities.

Examples of activities done in class and material will be shown, together with a reflection upon our responsibility as teachers to provide students with an inclusive education and how our syllabus and the English language itself can be used as allies and invaluable opportunities for critical education.

This session tackles the gap between theory and classroom reality when it comes to learner autonomy.

Many teachers know autonomy is a buzzword, but struggle to turn abstract concepts into practical steps. We’ll explore why autonomy matters—how it fuels motivation, deepens learning, and equips students to thrive beyond your classroom walls—and learn practical techniques to foster self-directed learners.

Participants will learn to:

  • Co-create learning goals with students and empower them to manage their emotional and metacognitive growth.
  • Identify barriers—overreliance on the teacher, low strategy awareness, weak metacognition—and adapt tasks to keep everyone moving forward.
  • Build in quick cycles where learners plan actions, monitor their progress, and evaluate outcomes.

Differentiated teaching in action

Bio: Katerina Miltiadous is a TEFL teacher based in Cyprus. After completing her bachelor degree in English Language and Literature she enriched her knowledge in teaching further by diving into a master degree in TEFL. She started teaching English as a Foreign Language almost ten years ago while the past five years she runs her own successful private English Institute and an after-school club.

Katerina’s teaching is characterised by creativity and her “signature” style is differentiated teaching to emphasizing on students’ feelings and varying needs.

This session will focus on the theory behind Differentiated Teaching as well as the concept itself.

The necessity of differentiation in teaching is more relevant than ever, as classes consist of mixed-ability students, making it challenging for teachers to help all students individually move a step forward every day.

In addition to addressing academic needs, differentiation reinforces students’ motivation, confidence, and performance.

Lack of motivation, low self-esteem, and distraction are situations students often find themselves in, with teachers trying hard to overcome these challenges—sometimes successfully and other times not as much. This makes differentiated teaching more essential than ever. Practical tips and examples from real lesson plans will be discussed and highlighted as tools to equip and help teachers implement and adapt this vital method of Differentiated Teaching.
